Starobulvarna St.
It makes
up a part of the complex of the western fortifications. It is located on the
third terrace from the Fortress Bridge, it dominates over the western, cape
part of the Old Town. The date of building is unknown. In the beginning of the
XVII century, it was greatly damaged. The first works on modernization were
carried out at the end of the XVII century. In the 30's of the XVIII century,
the wooden and earthern parapets were made in the bastion, soon they were altered
into stone ones by military engineer, K.Dalne. The last rebuilt of its upper
part was made in the 60's of the XVIII century.
It belongs to the type of the early bastions - not large, with obtuse angle.
It is built of stone and placed on the rocky ledges. It is hexahedral in its
plan, opened from the eastern, city side. The external planes are made with
positive bent. The internal space is blocked. The height of the walls is variable
(the highest point is 12 m from the foot of the rock from the west).
In 1969, the conservation works were carried out there.
The Armenian Bastion emphasizes the town-planning of the western complex of
the defensive constructions.

Bastion (Itallian)
1) It is corner, pentagonal in plan as a rule, fortification work, that has
appeared in the fortreses in epoch of the Renaissance because of the spreading
of the fire-arms. It corresponds to the corner towers of more ancient fortresses;
2) in the wide sense of the word it is the projection of the fortress construction
in general.
