They are a part of the system of the western city fortifications, that consist of the rectangular tower and City (Mychaylivski from the beginning of the XVIII century) Gates, defensive walls and casemate. They are located near the foot of the second terrace from the Fortress Bridge. They surround it by the defensive walls from the north, west, and east. In the XVI century, the rectangular tower was built on the northern part of the terrace on the base of two ancient constructions. At the end of the XVII century, the gates were made in its headwalls and new defensive walls were built from the south-western and north-eastern angles. In the first half of the XVIII century, the casemate was built. The wooden and earthern parapets with embrasures were made in all walls. In the 70- 80's of the XVIII century, the gallery for keeping the cannons under the tiled roof was built on the lot of one of the batteries, and the production of the gun powder was arranged in the casemate, after that it began to be called the laboratory. In the second half of the XIX century, the smithy of the fire prevention was located there. In 1876, the south-western wall near the gates was demolished to the width of the road because of the widening of the road, and the construction appeared to be divided into two parts.
The defensive walls, outgoing from the tower with the passage, make up the defensive belt, 270 m long, along the perimeter of the terrace. The wall thickness is from 3 m in the basis till 2 m in the upper part, the height of the walls is 7-10 m. The main, western elevation in the level of the lower part of the embrasures is connected with the tower by the white stone semi-wall.
The casemate is located southward from the City Gates on the area of the steep slope of the terrace, on the basis of the wooden walls.
The building is stone, one-tiered. It is 22 m long, 8 m wide in its western part and 4 m - in the eastern. The southern walls of the casemate are more than 15 m high, the nothern and eastern are not more than 3,5 m. The casemate has 2 entrances, 5 large cannon embrasures and 11 - for hand weapons. It is covered with a stone torispherical vault, there is a gable roof with tiling over it.
The City Gates are built of stone, the lower parts are coated. The western tower is rectangular with a passage, two-tiered, 8 m high. Its short walls are 10 m, long - 22 m, the wall thickness is 1-2 m. In 1962-1963, the restoration works were carried out in the complex of the City Gates. In 1984, the restoration of the casemate was finished.
